Minnesota Reading Corps

Minnesota Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to help every Minnesota child become a successful reader by the end of 3rd grade. The program places AmeriCorps members as literacy tutors in sites across Minnesota to implement a researched-based early literacy effort to help struggling readers.

Minnesota Reading Corps Elementary Literacy Tutors serve as one-on-one tutors and provide research-based interventions to students who are just below proficiency in reading. The tutors meet with each student daily for 20 minutes to build phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency skills. A Response to Intervention (RtI) model is followed.

Read at Home (RAH)

Why Read at Home?

  • You help your child learn new reading skills.
  • You help your child practice skills they learn at school.
  • You spend time with your child, and that helps your child be a more confident learner!

    Helpful Hints:

  • Try reading in the car or bus, while you cook or are waiting for dinner, or before bed.
  • Get excited when your child reads a difficult word.
  • Smile, make happy eye contact and use a caring and happy voice

Two more ways to help your child become a better reader:

  • Try asking your child questions about the story:
    • “Can you tell me one or two things that you remember about this story?”
    • “What is one thing you learned about this story?”
    • “Can you tell me about the beginning, the middle, and the end of the story?”
  • Ask your child to write or draw something they remember in the story.
