Understanding the Multi-Purpose Space in the Bond Referendum
As voters prepare for the bond referendum vote on November 4, questions have emerged about the multi-purpose gymnasium components. Here’s a detailed look at what these facilities are, why they’re needed, and how they fit into the overall plan.
The Current Situation
Right now, weight room equipment used by student for various physical education classes, teams and strength and conditioning training is located within the Career & Technical Education (CTE) wing. This 35-year-old space needs modernization to accommodate new career programming and updated learning environments.
To expand and update the CTE wing, the weight room equipment must be relocated. This creates an opportunity to improve facilities for the growing number of student needs while enabling critical career pathways improvements.
What’s Being Proposed
The bond referendum includes two connected components under the Community Wellness investment area:
Dedicated Space: A relocated and improved facilities for students, including weight room equipment, cardio and rehabilitation options. This space will primarily serve students for physical education classes and strength and conditioning programs.
Multi-Purpose Space: Additional space with two courts for basketball, pickleball and more. This also includes batting cage areas to support the growing needs of programming.
Addressing Misconceptions
This is not a commercial fitness center, this is a school training facility designed to serve students first.
Community access will be structured and limited, available through:
- Community education courses
- Facility rentals
- Scheduled activities and times
- Other district-organized programming
Strategic Connection to Other Priorities
This investment enables multiple priorities identified through community engagement:
- Career Education Modernization: Relocating the weight equipment unlocks the ability to expand and update the CTE wing for new career pathways programming
- Student Support: Provides proper facilities for the increasing number of students participating in athletic training and rehabilitation
- Activity Expansion: Creates space for growing student activities and teams without scheduling conflicts or late-night scheduling
- Efficient Use of Resources: Addresses multiple needs through strategic facility planning
Part of Comprehensive Planning
The space represents one component of a five-area investment plan that addresses:
- Critical building repairs (HVAC, infrastructure)
- Safety upgrades and critical repairs
- Learning space improvements for career pathways
- Early childhood and childcare facilities
- Shared community spaces
“These improvements work together,” said Superintendent Chip Rankin. “We can’t modernize our CTE spaces without relocating the equipment, and our students deserve proper facilities for both career learning and fitness.”
