Joe Hurlbut Selected as the Next Middle School Principal
Minnewaska Area Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of Joe Hurlbut as the next Middle School Principal. The School Board is expected to take official action at an upcoming meeting, with Mr. Hurlbut set to begin his role on July 1, 2026.
Mr. Hurlbut brings a strong background in education and leadership, including experience as a 5th-grade teacher, program coordinator, and Dean of Students. He has served in leadership roles at Runestone ALC and Bridgeway Career Learning Center, where he demonstrated a commitment to student success and innovative programming.
At Bridgeway Career Learning Center, Mr. Hurlbut played a key role in building the program from the ground up, expanding it to serve more than 110 students within two years. During this time, he implemented a competency-based learning system focused on mastery, ensuring students could progress based on demonstrated understanding rather than seat time.
His leadership approach emphasizes operational efficiency, strategic use of resources, and a strong focus on student outcomes. Notable accomplishments include significantly improving program efficiency, making after-school credit recovery six times more efficient and standard day programming three times more efficient using existing staff. He is also deeply committed to supporting rural schools through strong community partnerships and maximizing available resources to benefit students.
“Joe brings a thoughtful and student-centered approach to leadership,” said Scott Lempka, incoming superintendent of Minnewaska Area Schools. “His experience, innovation, and commitment to building strong systems will serve our middle school students, staff, and families well.”
Mr. Hurlbut will replace current Middle School Principal Blake Karas, who has accepted the position of Intermediate School Principal with Princeton Public Schools. Mr. Karas will begin his new role on July 1, 2026.
Minnewaska Area Schools extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Karas for his leadership and dedication to students, staff, and the broader school community. His contributions have made a lasting impact, and the district wishes him continued success in his new role.
Minnewaska Area Schools remains committed to engaging every student, every day, and looks forward to the leadership Mr. Hurlbut will bring to the middle school.
